Crazy, beautifully chaotic, raging screams, a dichotomy of lyrics.......
This oh so 'eccentric' quartet is just well, crazy....Yet, I've never heard any music as quite as unique as that of Manray's 19.

In all honestly, as much as I really dig some of the local bands of this certain genre, their CD, 'See You on The Ground' was blaring from my car's CD player for the first week I had it.....I was soo astonished by their music, that I became so sidetracked before I could actually write a review for them... But here I am, and so should you be listening to their CD while reading this..

MR19 could be classified as many certain types of sounds, but it would be sort of hard to just stick to one....Mainly because each song is always going to be different from the last. For example, the first song, errr intro possibly, is just thirty seconds of screaming....more than likely you'll end up getting an odd look on your face and think,"what the hell is this?" but right afterward is when you see who this band really is all about...and really, I'm sure you'll be quite impressed....

Dangling Participle is a Fugazi sounding song which also reminds me of Hot Water Music from the vocal aspect. I can see the 'emo' involved in this song, and yet it lingers throughout the CD, yet you may have to stop and catch it entirely....

Up until the first minute and a half of track five, it seems as if it's all one song, but then it turns into that sound that made the Chicago scene famous. In a way this song, 'The Land Effect' reminded me of the way the band 'Joan of Arc' (if any of you are familiar with them....) composed their music. The whiny vocals, the weezy guitars.....but it comes out to become addicting...

The next track,'See You on The Ground' just about killed me....This song is soooooooo awesome. Personally, this song completes the CD, and it's just soo, sooo good. Trust me, you'll all have this one on repeat for a few days.....It has such a good quality to it, and although it's lyrics aren't all too uplifting, it won't be making you feel otherwise .... Definitely the highlight.

Screaming and um...uniquely appealing for track seven...let's just say it's some crazy, shit spoken words ... Hmmm...

The eighth track, 'Justin's Song' has that 'punky' sound do it. I think they've done a few different mixes to this one as well ... I read in a review that they sent that someone said that they sounded like 'Tooth and Nail' records, 'Roadside Monument.' Actually, I see it in this track especially, and ironically ... it sounds like a lil' like Nirvana ... Old skool Nirvana that is .... just the guitars and screams mainly....

ok then....
Until the end of this thirteen song CD, Manray 19 will take you everywhere you wanted to go for a musical ride...It's best listened to from front to end..... don't just listen to the first ten seconds of each song just to see what their about, but seriously listen to this all the way through..... I never really thought anything significant came out of the Upper Peninsula, but wow...... I was completely contradicted....

If this unbelievably genius band were to roll into the Chicago or Milwaukee scene, I would definitely think that they would take over... in the meantime though, I highly recommend that all of you people should give this disc a listen to, especially all you indie-rocker kids.... This is ear friendly to mostly all, and yet, it wouldn't hurt to give them a chance anyway.....

As it was said before, I can surely see this disc becoming legendary..

See You on the Ground
(self-released)

The back of this disc has to be seen to be believed. It kinda shows the thought process of how bands go about the sequencing of a CD. Hard to explain more than that, except to say that there's a load of info there. Pretty cool.

The music is fuzzy and messy. Don't know what I expected from an UP (that's Upper Peninsula, for those not up on their Michigan nomenclature) band, but in any case I didn't expect this. Hyper drumming, languid shouts and heavy fuzz on the guitars.

As if the Chicago noise pop thing went into the backwoods, I suppose. The pop forms are there (deep in the background), the experimentation is basically in the drumming and the guitars and bass simply wail and moan. All with vaguely tuneful choruses. Really. You know, come to think of it, this does remind me a bit of the God Bullies and Thought Industry, a couple of southern Michigan bands. Vaguely. As much for the spirit of adventure as anything.

Energizing and exciting. manRay 19 may not have a huge commercial future, but this disc could become legendary. There is a lot here to appreciate and feed on. Highly recommended.

Avant-garde bands revive MQT stage

Live music will once again grace the stage of the Club MQT on
Saturday as the bands manRay 19 and One Shot Nothing play a benefit
concert.
"There aren't many places in Marquette for avant-garde bands to
play," said Kent Randell, who plays guitar and sings in manRay 19.
"We don't play any Top 40 covers, and we're too loud for bars."
Matt Mahaffey of Tri-M Productions  put the show together.
"It's going to be packed," he said.  "We're going to have to turn
people away at the door."
The building that was home to Club MQT and the Kleen Klubb is in the
process of becoming the Washington Street Pub.
Micheal Canda, who will manage the bar, said the top three floors of
the building will be a bar and the basement may become an all-ages
concert hall.  He said Saturday's concert will be a sort of trial.
"If everything goes well Saturday, we're going to have more gigs
here," Canda said.  "I think it's going to work out. ÝMarquette¨ may be
a good social scene again."
  The members of manRay19 are: Justin Worsham, "fuzz" bass and vocals;
Jesse DeCaire, bass and background vocals; Evan Potila, drums; and
Randell.  He described manRay 19's sound as noisy yet melodic.
"There's no way to describe our band: we're not punk or hardcore.
We're very loud," Randell said. "The most unusual thing about our band
is that we have two bass players."
One is noisy and distorted beyond belief and otrher bass is clean,
he said.  "We call them 'yin' and 'yang.'"
Admission is $5.  Procceds from the benefit will go to the U.P.
Children's Museum.  The show is open to all ages.  Doors open at 7 p.m.
