manRay19 is also a musical group from Marquette, MI., which formed
in the autumn of 1996. If you don't know where Marquette is, it is in Michigan's
glorious Upper Peninsula....God's Country. (or God's Forsaken Land).
manRay19 has put on energetic shows in their little city for a few years now,
some highlights including the Warehouse show (in an old Warehouse)
for over 500 people and other concerts mostly put on by themselves in basements,
community centers., etc., etc. They have had the pleasure of supporting bands that come through
the area like Quixote, Small Brown Bike, Boris the Sprinkler,
James Kolchaka Superstar, Digger, and
the Lotus Band. Ironically, they have also been within days or even hours of opening for No Knife, Warren DeFever, and Wesley Willis.
Consistantly, the live experience has been
just that, and experience: duck calls,
deer (yes, deer),wheelchairs being thrown at the audience, bricklayers
in tu-tus, destroyed mics and/or lighting rigs, and the occasional guitar pedal
covered in liquid. In fact, it is surprising that they still have any equipment
at all (but there isn't anything a little duct tape and solder can't cure.)
The (unexpected) success of their hometown shows has put them on the road throughout the midwest.
On the road they've played with the likes of A.C. and the Candy Snatchers. Their first 7" is almost out of print, which prompted the band to record
a full-length cassette entitled "Great Lakes, Great Times." Because they could't wait
for their first compact disc to come out, there is also a demo CD available entitled
"See You On The Ground."
Although
$$ has always been a problem, the full-length CD in
the works (titled Shady Hinting Shady) is now available in CD-R form. It includs re-recorded / re-mixed tracks from the all of their releases,
plus 7 new songs. For everybody who has asked, politely of course, for better
recordings your perseverance has been rewarded.
Having two bass players, manRay's sound is kinda hard to describe (no,
they don't play any Ned's Atomic Dust Bin or Kyuss covers...but while we are
on the topic of history, check out John Coltrane's Africa sessions to hear
some great 2-bass player work). The two basses and guitar like to build unusual chords that
are propelled very energetically by the drumming of Evan. Unlike other
bands with two basses, Jesse and Justin's parts are distinct and seperate.
Due to circumstances beyond their control (they don't like to talk
about their abduction experience), they have had to change their name from
manRay to manRay19.

Jessie plays the "clean tone" bass parts and shakes around alot.
He is a single, white, male
that holds up the bottom end of the wall of sound. He gets some pretty
rad humback with his cord.
PREVIOUS BANDS:
The Happy Accidents, Sweet Jimmy and the Tree Huggers, the Moby Dicks,
and Chub.

Justin also
plays "affected" bass. His sound is best described as thick, loud,
and distinct; with the help of a possessed delay pedal and rebuilt distortion
pedals. Occasaionally he sings. A true survivor, not only survived a prolonged
battle with Muscular Dystrophy, but also onstage attacks by his fellow bass
sectionmate.
PREVIOUS BANDS:
Santa Vomit, Engroan, Pastoma, and Chub.

Kent
is a blonde guy who plays guitar, and makes stuff come out of his mouth.
He frequently gets attacked by Jesse the bass player on stage. He has had
history papers published and has been to Ecuador. Kent has put off his
dreams of getting his M.L.S. (Masters of Library Science) and becoming an
Historical Archivist for the tangible reality of Rock N' Roll.
PREVIOUS BANDS:
Reality Shock, Leslie Can't Love, Chub, and Heck No.

Evan plays drums and writes some of the songs. He
made his millions patenting the game Hide
the candle. PREVIOUS BANDS:
The Moby Dicks and Sacchrin Pop.
Although they can't
be pigeon-holed into one particular box, spectators have said things like
a cross between Hum and Roadside Momument. The influence of Fugazi
and Sunny Day Real Estate, the noise of Gravitar, and the poetic dissonance
of Slint melt into a unique sound. There, didn't that sound pompous?
